Mississippi State Fires Head Coach Zach Arnett After Less Than One Season

Arnett's Tenure Marked by Challenges and Tragic Loss

Mississippi State Breaks Ties With Coach Amidst Challenging Circumstances

Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season. The announcement comes after a year marked by challenges both on and off the field, including the tragic death of head coach Mike Leach in December 2022.

Following Leach's passing, Arnett was promoted from defensive coordinator to interim head coach before being given the permanent position. However, during his brief tenure, the Bulldogs struggled on the field, finishing the 2022 season with a 4-8 record.

Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon expressed his disappointment in Arnett's departure but acknowledged the difficult circumstances surrounding the program.

"This was a very difficult decision, but one that we believe is in the best interests of our football program," Selmon said. "We appreciate Coach Arnett's contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors."

The firing of Arnett leaves Mississippi State searching for a new head coach to lead the program forward in the aftermath of a tumultuous year. The search is expected to begin immediately, with Selmon stating that the Bulldogs are committed to finding the right fit for their program.
